Spider-Man’s sidekick, Spider-Boy, reveals his identity sending ripples throughout Marvel, as a shocking link to She-Hulk could expand the multiverse.
The following contains spoilers for Edge of Spider-Verse #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
As the story reaches its conclusion, Spider-Boy takes off his mask, exposing his true identity as a young boy named Bailey Briggs. The Briggs surname holds fascinating significance across various Marvel Comics. Stephanie Briggs, an FBI agent introduced in the 1995 comic Web of Scarlet Spider (by Tom DeFalco and Paris Karounos), Jeremy Briggs, a transient alchemist from 2011’s Avengers Academy (by Christos Gage and Tom Raney), and even Foxy Briggs, a long-standing thief since Amazing Spider-Man #31 (by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko), all contribute to the intriguing legacy of the Briggs name.
Bailey Briggs and She-Hulk Have History
However, fans can find the most interesting connection in another work authored by Slott, namely 2004’s She-Hulk #3 (by Dan Slott and Juan Bobillo). In this issue, Bailey Briggs is an elderly individual employed at Hammer Aeronautics, until he meets his demise at the hands of his supervisor.
Following the tragic events, Bailey Briggs’s murder trial became a significant case for Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk, and her law firm. During the trial, a spectral manifestation of Bailey appeared as a witness, falsely accusing his former girlfriend of the crime. As a consequence of his false testimony, Bailey was subsequently confined to the Cage of Cytorrak as a form of penance by Doctor Strange.
Spider-Boy’s Story is Unknown Territory
This connection between Bailey and Jennifer has generated curiosity among perceptive followers. As Spider-boy currently resides in Earth-616, where he is almost completely unknown, fans are speculating that Briggs and the newly revealed Spider-Boy are the same person, but displaced in time and the multiverse.
As Dan Slott had hinted earlier this year when the initial glimpse of Spider-Boy was revealed, upcoming narratives featuring the character will involve renowned creators and will venture into uncharted territory. Slott has also promised a developing storyline for this latest character: “He’s got strange new spider-powers, secret ties to dark corners of Spider-Man lore, and a story that’s all his own… that is right about to begin!” Dan Slott changed the Spider-Man mythos with incredible events like “Spider-Island” and the original Spider-Verse comic during his Amazing Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man runs. With the introduction and subsequent identity reveal of Spidey’s new “sidekick,” Spider-Boy, Slott alters Spider-Man’s canon further. Where Spider-Boy will go from here is anyone’s guess, but the character already has confirmed, and suspected, ties to major Marvel figures. If Spider-Boy’s success continues, he could become a major player in Spider-Man books, She-Hulk comics, and beyond.
