Shinkai Makoto’s hit anime movie Kimi no Na wa. will receive a live action Hollywood movie adaptation to be produced by J. J. Abrams ( Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ) and Lindsey Weber.
It was also revealed that Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions had acquired the rights to a live action adaptation and have begun to work together to create the film, with Eric Heisserer ( Arrival ) writing the script.
Released in Japan in Aug. 2016, Kimi no Na wa. took the domestic market by storm, becoming the second-highest grossing domestic film in Japan behind Studio Ghibli classic Spirited Away. However, it also found huge success with international audiences, as well as being praised generally for its animation and moving plot.
Original director Shinkai commented on his anticipation for the possibilities of a Kimi no Na wa. adaptation inspired by Japanese imagination and local medium but mixed with Hollywood influences.
