Marvel Debuts Sam Wilson’s Scrapped Captain America Costumes

Unused concept art from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcases several other versions of Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) Captain America costume.

The images come from the recently released book, Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Art of the Series. While Sam’s main costume remains similar to the final version seen in the Disney+ series, the book reveals that the series’ designers played with several different looks for his wings, including other colors and shapes.

The concept art is the latest item to come out of Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Art of the Series, which also displays art of unused costumes for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and reveals that Sam’s shield almost included a feature allowing it to activate an energy barrier similar to the ones used by the Wakandan army.

“I also just really wanted to think of other ways that could emphasize the defensive nature of the shield itself and not just look for new ways that it could be used as a weapon,” development concept illustrator Wesley Burt explained. “I immediately thought of the various shield tech used by the Border Tribe and their blue cape shields, and also the big cloaking shield around Wakanda itself, as a jumping-off point for how it could be implemented here.”

Captain America Will Return

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was billed as a limited series, but Sam Wilson will return in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America 4. Malcolm Spellman, who served as head writer on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will pen the script alongside Dalan Musson, with Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) sitting in the director’s chair. Plot details remain under wraps, but the film will see Sam donning the shield once again. It is unclear if Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier will return.

Captain America 4 is one of many movies Marvel Studios currently has in the works. Other projects include Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Nov. 11), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Feb. 17, 2023), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023), The Marvels (July 28, 2023), Fantastic Four (TBA), Blade (TBA), Deadpool 3 (TBA), Shang-Chi 2 (TBA), Thunderbolts (TBA) and an X-Men film (TBA).

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney+.
