Loki star Tom Hiddleston shares his theory about what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s God of Mischief so side-splittingly hilarious.
Loki star Tom Hiddleston recently explained why the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s God of Mischief is so funny.
Hiddleston shared his thoughts on how the villain turned antihero keeps fans in stitches during an interview with Lily James for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “The funny thing with Loki is he wants to let everyone know of his great high status,” he said. “And there’s nothing like status for comedy, really. Anyone who thinks they’re important… If you pump up the hubris, humiliation can follow, and then it’s funny. But you also play it with a sort’ve straight back, too.”
Hiddleston will reprise the Loki role next when the Disney+ series of the same returns for its second season. Season 1 head writer Michael Waldron recently revealed that the show was only reconfigured from a limited series to an ongoing series late in production. This meant retooling Loki‘s original ending to make the finale more open-ended, although Waldron also noted that many other endings were considered prior to that point, as well. “There’s always a different ending. But there was the original one season-ending, which I guess is just for me,” he said.
Loki Season 2 began filming in June 2022 at Pinewood Studios in London, United Kingdom. It’s unclear how long the shoot will last, however, it’s likely to mirror Season 1’s roughly four-month principal photography timetable. Hiddleston expressed his enthusiasm for the second season shortly before filming commenced, saying, “[I]t’s really exciting. Yeah, I can’t say too much, but lots of questions [from Loki Season 1] to be answered.”
The answers Hiddleston promised fans won’t come from Waldron’s pen, though, as the scribe recently confirmed Eric Martin will replace him as the head writer for Loki Season 2. Martin was part of the writing staff on Season 1, and co-wrote the season finale, “For All Time. Always.” with Waldron. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will also take over from Kate Herron, who helmed all six episodes of Loki‘s first season.
In contrast to these behind-the-scenes shake-ups, Loki Season 2’s cast will apparently comprise mostly familiar faces. Aside from Hiddleston, key supporting players including Owen Wilson (Mobius M. Mobius) are Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Ravonna Renslayer) are officially signed on, with Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie) expected to return, as well. Previous comments by Waldron also indicate the cast will have more episodes to work with in Loki Season 2, although Marvel Studios hasn’t publicly commented on the second season’s episode count.
All six episodes of Loki Season 1 are currently streaming on Disney+. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
