The Callisto Protocol was announced back in December of 2020. The game, directed by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield, was initially intended to be set in the same universe as the popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, another KRAFTON, Inc title. That decision has since been walked back as the world of the game became too ambitious to coexist with PUBG. However, the game will reportedly still feature a handful of references to the hit battle royale title.

While Schofield works on The Callisto Protocol, a spiritual successor to Dead Space, the original Dead Space series continues to see love from its parent studio, EA, in the form of a remake of the first Dead Space game, announced in July 2021. In May of 2022, the Dead Space remake received an official release date of January 27, 2023. Schofield is best known for his work directing 3D platformer Gex: Enter the Gecko and creating the original Dead Space. He didn’t work on either of the sequels to Dead Space or the upcoming remake, but he did receive a shoutout in the credits of Dead Space: Extraction, a spinoff for the Nintendo Wii.

While The Callisto Protocol is Schofield’s follow-up to the Dead Space series, it still aims to strike its own tone. Dead Space protagonist Isaac Clarke has been swapped out for a grungy prisoner named Jacob Lee. Rather than the USG Ishimura, the high-tech mining ship of Dead Space, the player will be tasked with escaping a maximum-security space prison called Black Iron. The Callisto Protocol borrows heavily from Lovecraftian cosmic horror stories for its scariest elements. Still, The Callisto Protocol does contain a handful of throwbacks to Dead Space. As in Dead Space, the player will track their health by looking at a strange implant on the back of his neck, and Jacob will certainly creep down hallways populated by grimy alien freaks with just as much efficacy as his predecessor.

Schofield and his team at Striking Distance Studios have affirmed their intention to make a true next-gen experience, taking advantage of the power of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, the game will also be available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.
