Director Rick Famuyiwa, who has helmed three episodes of The Mandalorian, will be credited as an executive producer for Season 3 of the series.
New insight from Star Wars Celebration 2022 reveals that director Rick Famuyiwa will receive an executive producer credit for The Mandalorian Season 3.
At the panel “Mando+: A Conversation with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni,” Favreau made the announcement. “So, Rick’s been directing with us since the second episode of The Mandalorian, and this year he’s joining us as an executive producer for this season.” This promotion was news to Famuyiwa himself, who said, “I’m just finding out now, actually. Thank you guys. For some reason, Jon saw my film, Dope, and said, ‘that’s Star Wars material!'”
Continuing to speak of his personal connection to the saga, Famuyiwa said that the original Star Wars film was the first movie he saw in theaters. “I remember waiting in that long line to go see that movie with no idea of what I was going to go see. From the moment I saw the opening crawl and the Star Destroyer flying over that screen, my life was changed. So this has always been a dream of mine to tell stories in this world, this universe, this galaxy.”
Discussing his relationship with Favreau, Famuyiwa said, “And again, to walk in, and Jon to sort of say ‘hey, I want you to do the second episode of this thing,’ and to sort of follow up, ‘hey, it was an honor.’ I’ve been around for the ride ever since.” He also mentioned that he is looking forward to “a lot of exciting developments” in the next season.
Famuyiwa directed three episodes of The Mandalorian through the first two seasons. From Season 1, his Star Wars directorial debut “Chapter 2: The Child” has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93 percent. This episode was audiences’ first introduction to the powers and abilities of Grogu. Famuyiwa returned later in the season to write the teleplay and direct “Chapter 6: The Prisoner,” which brought in Bill Burr’s character of Migs Mayfield.
The Season 2 episode, “Chapter 15: The Believer” was also written and directed by Famuyiwa, reuniting Burr with the filmmaker in an installment lauded by many critics for its character work and thematic storytelling. This was also the only episode from the series without an appearance by Grogu, resulting in a more direct focus placed on the internal conflict of Pedro Pascal’s title character.
The Mandalorian Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Disney+. Season 3 is set to debut in February 2023.
