The Mandalorian’s Bo-Katan Returns in Season 3

Katee Sackhoff will once again don Bo-Katan’s beskar armor in the upcoming third season of Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Per Empire magazine, the first official footage from The Mandalorian Season 3 was shown at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim. Following The Mandalorian Season 2 and the spinoff miniseries The Book of Boba Fett, Din “Mando” Djarin (Pedro Pascal) is apparently still facing the ramifications of removing his helmet — and will be paying a visit to the planet Mandalore itself. The footage also marks the return of characters like Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) and, of course, Bo-Katan Kryze — who is seen sitting on a throne and, in Empire‘s words, is visibly “pissed.”

Voiced by Sackhoff, Bo-Katan was introduced to Star Wars canon during the fourth season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Sackhoff later reprised her voice role as Bo-Katan in the animated series Star Wars Rebels before getting the chance to play the character in live-action in the second season of The Mandalorian.

The estranged sister of Mandalorian duchess Satine Kryze, Bo-Katan was a member of Death Watch, a terrorist organization that disagreed with Satine’s pacifist approach to ruling Mandalore and wanted the planet to return to its ancient ways as a world of warriors. During the events of The Clone Wars, Death Watch to seized control of Mandalore, only for Darth Maul to claim the planet for himself.

After the fact, Bo-Katan managed to rescue Satine, only for her sister to be recaptured. Maul then killed Satine and imprisoned the duchess’ one-time paramour, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Bo-Katan aided Obi-Wan’s escape, hoping for assistance from the Galactic Republic in reclaiming Mandalore. Leading a squad of Clone Troopers, former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano managed to capture Maul (albeit briefly), allowing Bo-Katan to become the planet’s new ruler.

By the events of Rebels, Bo-Katan had been forced to abdicate the throne following the Galactic Empire’s occupation of Mandalore. She became the planet’s ruler once more after being gifted the Darksaber by Sabine Wren. By the events of The Mandalorian, however, Bo-Katan had lost control of her home planet once again, with Moff Gideon having claimed the Darksaber during the Purge of Mandalore.

It was Bo-Katan who informed Din Djarin that the Mandalorians who raised him were actually members of the Children of the Watch, a group of zealots who broke off from mainstream Mandalorian society. Din ultimately defeated Gideon to claim the Darksaber for himself. He tried to give it to Bo-Katan, who refused to accept it on the grounds that it must be won in combat. The Mandalorian‘s spinoff miniseries The Book of Boba Fett explained that Bo-Katan did not simply take the Darksaber a second time because it’s believed that by doing so the first time, she doomed Mandalore to its current fate.
