Maverick Prepares to Take Flight With a Massive Box Office Prediction

Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick is currently tracking for the biggest worldwide opening of Tom Cruise’s career.

Following its premiere at CinemaCon in late April, Top Gun: Maverick is slated to release in theaters this Friday, May 27. According to Deadline, the film is predicted to make $180 million worldwide over Memorial Day weekend, with its domestic earnings expected to account for anywhere from $92 million to over $100 million of that.

The Top Gun sequel’s marketing campaign has been met with much praise, even from rival studios. While older men are expected to account for the most significant portion of the film’s domestic audience, Paramount is hoping that Maverick will prove to be a “five-quad” movie (i.e. an “aggressive overperforming title”).

On top of that, Maverick is already off to a very strong start critically. At the time of writing, the film holds a “Certified Fresh” rating of 97 percent on the review aggragate site Rotten Tomatoes. “Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even trickier than a 4G inverted dive, delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style,” the critics’ consensus reads.

Maverick serves as a legacy sequel to the 1986 military action drama Top Gun, which starred Cruise and Anthony Edwards as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, respectively. Maverick sees Cruise reprise his role as the titular fighter pilot, who is tasked with training a new generation of pilots — including Goose’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) — for a top-secret mission.

Cruise isn’t the only Top Gun star returning for the sequel, with Val Kilmer reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. That being said, Marverick‘s cast list is decidedly dominated by the young blood.

In addition to Teller as Rooster, the film stars Glen Powell as Jake “Hangman” Seresin, Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Floyd, Monica Barbaro as Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, Jay Ellis as Reuben “Payback” Fitch, Danny Ramirez as Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia and Greg Tarzan Davis as Javy “Coyote” Machado. Maverick‘s cast also includes the likes of Jennifer Connelly as Penelope “Penny” Benjamin, Jon Hamm as Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, Ed Harris as Chester “Hammer” Cain and Charles Parnell as Solomon “Warlock” Bates.
