The Mandalorian Reunites With Greef Karga and IG-11 in First Look at New Series

Marvel Comics has unveiled a first look at its upcoming comic book adaptation of Disney+’s hit live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian #1 is slated to hit comic shops on Wednesday, July 6 from writer Rodney Barnes, artist Georges Jeanty, inker Karl Story, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg and letterer Joe Caramagna. The issue will ship with a main cover by Adi Granov, as well as a slew of variant covers by the likes of John Tyler Christopher, Declan Shalvey, David Aja, the duo of Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho, the duo of Phil Jimenez and Arif Prianto and, finally, Nick Gindaux.

Marvel’s limited series will adapt the entirety of The Mandalorian Season 1, running for a total of eight issues (with each presumably covering one of the season’s eight episodes). The unlettered preview pages from issue #1 retell key moments from the show’s first episode, “Chapter 1: The Mandalorian,” such as Mando’s first on-screen meetings with characters like Greef Karga, Kuiil and IG-11.

“The story of the Mandalorian checks so many boxes of the stuff I’m passionate about,” Barnes said when Marvel’s adaptation was first announced back in February. “I love Westerns, fantasy, science fiction, comedy, drama.. it’s a dream gig for any writer. I’m just glad I was chosen for this assignment!”

The Mandalorian Season 1 premiered on Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2019, running for eight episodes through Dec. 27, 2019. The Star Wars show subsequently returned for a second season, which aired for an additional eight episodes from Oct. 30, 2020 through Dec. 18, 2020. The show follows the exploits of bounty hunter Din Djarin (aka Mando) and Grogu, a Force-sensitive child belonging to the same alien race as late Jedi Master Yoda.

Star Wars fans last saw Din and Grogu in Disney+’s live-action Star Wars limited series The Book of Boba Fett, which ran for seven episodes from Dec. 29, 2021 to Feb. 9, 2022. The Book of Boba Fett established key plot points heading into The Mandalorian Season 3, such as Din being exiled from his Mandalorian tribe, getting a new ship and being reunited with Grogu, who declined to follow the path of the Jedi under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker. The Mandalorian Season 3 is currently expected to premiere on Disney+ in either late 2022 or early 2023.
