A new trailer for Disney+’s Ms. Marvel sees Kamala Khan receive her own creed akin to Spider-Man’s “great power and great responsibility” mantra.
A new trailer for Disney+’s Ms. Marvel gives Iman Vellani’s series protagonist Kamala Khan a creed to live by, similar to Spider-Man’s familiar mantra “With great power comes great responsibility.”
The trailer begins with Kamala looking at a display of her favorite Avenger, Captain Marvel, and wondering how Carol Danvers convinced everyone she was good. This is followed by another character telling Kamala, “Good is not a thing you are, Kamala. It is a thing you do.” From there, Kamala puts on the bracelet that grants her new powers, and shows off said powers in subsequent clips, such as creating energy walls and giant energy hands.
The trailer ends with Kamala and her friend Bruno Carrelli arguing about whether Kamala dressing up as Captain Marvel is an homage or a lawsuit. Kamala jokingly says that she and Captain Marvel will be “the first case in the American Judiciary to hug it out.”
Regarding her portrayal of Kamala, who will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Muslim superhero, Vellani remarked last year, “The fact that the show is being made and they’re including this character in the MCU is [what’s important]. I don’t really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani — it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough.”
While Kamala will be the first Muslim hero in the MCU, it was shown in the series’ first trailer that she will not be an Inhuman as she was in the comics. Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige discussed why the character has new powers, commenting, “We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. [Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match.”
Additionally, Kamala’s co-creator Sana Amanat defended the change in powers, saying that it was important to Marvel Studios to link Kamala’s powers “to larger stories in the Marvel Universe.” She added, “I know people are like, ‘How dare you change the powers!’ I know people are upset about it, but as someone who’s probably one of the closest people to this character from the inception, and having spoken to [co-creator G. Willow Wilson] about this as well, I think Willow and I have always felt that this made sense. This was the right move because there are bigger stories to tell.”
Ms. Marvel premieres June 8 on Disney+.
