Norman Reedus, star of Death Stranding, just confirmed that he is currently working on a sequel to the game with director Hideo Kojima.
According to the game’s star, Norman Reedus, Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima’s award-winning action game, will be receiving a sequel.
As reported by The Verge, Reedus, who provided motion capture and voice work for the first game’s protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges, recently let slip in an interview that he’s been working with Kojima on a follow-up. When asked about his experience starring in the first game, Reedus said, “We just started the second one.” He described the unannounced project as “part two” of the Death Stranding story.
The sequel is a long time coming — in August 2021, Reedus told IGN Brazil, “I think we’re doing a second Death Stranding.” Shortly after, Hideo Kojima teased a new project which fans speculated might be related to Death Stranding. While Kojima hasn’t given any specific updates since then, Reedus seems more confident now than last year. At the time, the project was in the early stages of contract negotiation, while it now appears to be in active development. Whether or not any of Reedus’s star-studded cast of co-stars, like Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker, Léa Seydoux and Guillermo del Toro, will return for the second Death Stranding game remains uncertain.
Death Stranding, which tells the unimaginable and fantastical story of a delivery man shipping packages across the United States during a period in which extenuating circumstances make it difficult for most people to travel, released back in 2019 for the PlayStation 4. The game won a tidy handful of accolades, including the Game Awards for Best Score/Music, Best Performance (going to Mads Mikkelsen, although Norman Reedus also earned a nomination) and Best Direction.
Since its initial launch, Death Stranding has seen numerous re-releases. A PC version came to Steam in 2020, and Death Stranding Director’s Cut excised the game’s iconic Monster Energy sponsorship on the PlayStation 5 in 2021. Death Stranding Director’s Cut eventually made its way to Steam as well, also absent any Monster Energy. Since then, Kojima has reportedly had his hands full with two new projects, which he has described as “big” and “challenging.” Which, if either, of these projects is the Death Stranding sequel is not entirely clear.
Aspiring porters can play the first Death Stranding on PlayStation 4 or the Director’s Cut on PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows. Everyone else can simply hope that, if Death Stranding can come back, maybe someday the world will get to see Mads Max.
