The 10 Best Spears, Ranked

While Elden Ring continues to amaze fans in the months following its release, its player base continues to evaluate weapons in search of finding the best items scattered across the Lands Between. Millions of players have had the opportunity to try out most of the weapon classes offered by Elden Ring, with many preferring the melee weapon class that has the most natural range: spears. Available from the moment a player chooses their character, spears are a consistent option for ranged melee builds that still want to participate in close-quarters combat.

The vast majority of items in this weapon class are usable, regardless of their stats (primarily because of spears’ ability to fight from the outside); however, a few select choices are head-and-shoulders above their competition.

10 Serpent-Hunter Is A Must-Have For One Of Elden Ring’s Best Fights

There’s no doubt that not a single weapon in Elden Ring has more limited use than the Serpent-Hunter. Despite this, the spear (capable of being upgraded to +10) is an absolute necessity for the terrifying fight against shardbearer, Rykard, as it receives a significant damage buff and new weapon skills for the course of the encounter, which greatly reduces the difficulty of the entire fight. Although Serpent-Hunter is fairly useless outside of taking down Rykard, arguably no other weapon provides such massive assistance for a single encounter.

Players should make sure to grab this one before defeating Rykard; Serpent-Hunter disappears should the Tarnished defeat him without picking it up.

9 Rotten Crystal Spear Flips The Script On Enemies

For any Tarnished tired of being on the receiving end of the Scarlet Rot, the Rotten Crystal Spear offers a quality choice for turning the table against enemies. Despite relatively low base damage, the Scarlet Rot inflicted by this item rips through enemies while providing some much-needed catharsis.

The Rotten Crystal Spear can only be obtained late in the game’s narrative, but the journey to the Haligtree is definitely worth it, netting the player this item and a cornucopia of other loot for their troubles.

8 Tree Spear Pairs Perfectly With Faith Builds

A holy variant of Elden Ring’s basic spear, the Tree Spear pairs greatly with character builds centered around Golden Order incantations and sorcery. This item possesses significantly higher base damage than a lot of the other options in its class, and the elevated holy damage it generates easily offsets its mediocre scaling. On top of this, the item comes equipped with a unique heavy attack and weapon skill, providing players a bit more variability in their approach than the average spear.

Obtainable in Liurnia from very early on in the game, the Tree Spear is a great option for players that are just starting out their quest for the Elden Throne.

7 Inquisitor’s Girandole Utilizes Bleed From A Distance

A lesser version of a Remembrance item obtainable later in the game, the Inquisitor’s Girandole gives the player a solid medium range option during mid-to-late sections of their playthrough. Although the spear’s weapon skill leaves a little to be desired (since it can’t be infused with Ashes of War), bleed damage and solid weapon scaling (up to a B in Faith) more than makes up for it.

Found in the depth of Volcano Manor, this weapon is dropped upon defeating Abductor Virgins and appears to have been used by the former members of Lord Rykard’s forces, inflicting torture upon whatever unfortunate nobles were captured under Mount Gelmir.

6 Vyke’s War Spear Spreads The Frenzied Flame

While several spears offer ranged weapon skills and solid stat scaling, Vyke’s War Spear is the only one that boasts significant madness buildup as one of its attributes. Players that obtain this item by defeating Festering Finger Vyke would benefit from adding a few points to Dexterity and Faith; this item scales to B and C in those stats, respectively.

The spear’s original owner – another Tarnished – was renowned as being the Tarnished closest to obtaining the title of Elden Lord. After succumbing to the allure of the Frenzied Flame, this weapon is all that remains of his fallen legacy.

5 Cleanrot Spear Honors Malenia’s Bravest Knights

Malenia’s Cleanrot Knights possess some of the most courageous backstories found in Elden Ring, while their weapons, the Cleanrot Spears, honor this inspiring legacy by yielding extreme damage against any enemy unfortunate enough to cross this weapon’s path. Their physical damage and rot buildup are only made more impressive by the solid scaling this weapon achieves when fully upgraded.

To obtain this item, players must defeat the Cleanrot Knights (this includes their ghost variants) left scattered across the Lands Between. This pursuit is best left to the most patient of players; the drop rates on this weapon are among the lowest in the game.

4 Death Ritual Spear Takes Its Attacks To The Skies

The Death Ritual Spear comes with one of the better weapon skills found on a spear, raining down death from above by shooting projectiles into the air that track after targeted enemies. This added range makes it one of the more viable options in the whole weapon class. Scaling up to B in Dexterity would be enough to make most weapons usable, but the added versatility stemming from its weapon skill pushes it up the ranks.

This weapon can only be found by defeating the Death Rite Bird found on the Mountaintop of the Giants, so players should be ready for a decently challenging battle before attempting to acquire it.

3 Siluria’s Tree Harnesses Primordial Power

Siluria’s Tree is the reward for defeating a named variant of one of Elden Ring’s most challenging enemies: the Crucible Knight. Located in the Deeproot Depths, Siluria’s Tree is capable of dishing out high holy damage in addition to quality scaling across three different stats. The damage, coupled with a fantastic weapon skill capable of blasting enemies away from a distance makes this weapon a premier choice for players.

Looted from Crucible Knight Siluria, this spear harnesses the power of the Crucible (the primordial soup of the Lands Between) to the great effect.

2 Bolt of Gransax Uses The Ancient Power Of Dragons

One of Elden Ring’s legendary armaments, the Bolt of Gransax was first wielded by the colossal dragon, Gransax, who can be found sprawled across the royal capital of Leyndell. Armed with what’s arguably the most visually dazzling weapon skill in the game, the Bolt of Gransax takes a page out of Zeus’ book by allowing players to hurl spears of lightning toward their target, making the weapon as useful as it is stylish.

Given that this item is made from the material of the giant bolt lodged into Leyndell’s landscape, players must platform their way to the top of the oversized weapon (try approaching from the Erdtree Sanctuary site of grace) to obtain this weapon.

1 Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear Is An Appropriate Reward For A Great Boss Fight

A spear worthy of its wielder’s haughty lineage, Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear can be obtained from the Remembrance of the Blood Lord after defeating Mohg in one of Elden Ring’s best late-game boss fights. This weapon is capable of outrageous damage on top of a nasty, unique weapon skill, and despite only scaling up to C in its highest attributes, halts enemies in their tracks with significant bleed damage.

Although acquiring this weapon requires the player to complete a few missions for Mohg’s storyline (or reach the area via means found late in the game), its status as one of the top-tier weapons in all Elden Ring is undeniable.
