Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Hides an Eternals Cameo

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special contains an Eternals Easter egg, reminiscent of a deleted Easter egg in James Gunn’s GotG Vol. 2.

A newly reported leak from the filming of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special contains the first Eternals Easter egg — a poster featuring Eternals‘ Bollywood star Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) as the lead in Haxan 3, hauntingly reminiscent of a deleted Easter egg in James Gunn’s previous Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

James Gunn has previously incorporated posters of his fictional sequel Haxan into his work. Rob Zombie’s Haxan appeared as a poster in Gunn’s Super movie. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he placed Nathan Fillion’s Simon William, aka Wonder Man as the lead role in Haxan 2‘s poster after trying to incorporate his role into the film. Despite Gunn’s effort to feature Wonder Man in GotG Vol. 2, neither Wonder Man nor the Easter egg made it to the theatrical release.

Kumail Nanjiani almost landed a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but at least Kingo has gotten the part of Gunn’s third Haxan poster this time. In the recent leak, the Bollywood star seems to have made his breakout into Hollywood. The question fans are eager to know is whether Kingo’s actor Kumail Nanjiani might be involved in GotG Holiday Special and GotG Vol. 3?

Earlier this year, Eternals director Chloe Zhao, Marvel Studio’s president Kevin Feige and executive producer Nate Moore confirmed Eternals’ redefining impact on the future MCU. Phase 4 movies and series like Loki, WandaVision, and the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are all intertwined with key storylines in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Eternals is no different. Thanos’ brother Eros (Harry Styles) made an unexpected appearance in the end credits; Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman revealed a secret family crest. As a stand-alone, Eternals contains several Easter eggs that prepare for the characters’ further interaction within the MCU.

The impact of the Eternals killing a Celestial remains unclear, but the timeline also coincides with Lokis’ destruction of the Sacred Timeline, resetting the Multiverse to default. It’s not unlikely for characters from Eternals to enter the main storyline with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The details are still a mystery for now. Judging by the fate of the previous two posters of the Haxan saga, there’s a very slight chance for Nanjiani to be involved in person in the upcoming GotG Holiday Special. However, filming outside the world-famous TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard with a Christmas theme suggests that the Disney+ special will take place on Earth. James Gunn also stated that the Disney+ special may have been his finest work and is required to watch before GotG Vol. 3.

Since the GotG Holiday Special and Vol. 3 both filmed at the same time, it will also be interesting to know who the director will feature for his Haxan 4 poster. With multiple Phase 4 movies and series like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and She-Hulk hitting the big screen and streaming services soon, there will be more exciting development within the MCU.
