Action Comics writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson explains what kind of impact, if any, Superman’s death in Justice League #75 has on his solo series.
The following contains spoilers from recent issues of Justice League #75, on sale now from DC Comics.
Action Comics writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson explained what kind of impact Superman’s death in Justice League #75 has on his story starring the Man of Steel.
Johnson recently spoke with CBR about Action Comics and the series’ upcoming conclusion of the Warworld Saga. During the interview, he was asked if Justice League #75 and Superman’s death would have any kind of effect on Johnson’s solo series. “I don’t want to spoil what Joshua Williamson has coming up in ‘Death of the Justice League,’ but I can say that he and I have been aware of each other’s stories for a very long time, and neither one of us has had to pivot or undo anything that we’ve done,” Johnson answered. “All the plans that both of us have for our respective stories are going on unchanged, so there is no need for fans to worry about anything.”
He continued, “I’ve had a lot of readers reach out to me online, worried that the action is coming to an abrupt halt or that we’ve had to dump our plans. That’s not happening. Beyond that, I can say that fans should read both series as if they’re independent of each other, and how they’re tied together will be made clear later. At first, it might seem like they’re happening in different timelines, but by the end, it all makes sense. Keep reading!”
The final act of Johnson’s Warworld Saga begins in Action Comics #1043, which releases on May 24. The story will see Mongul bring about a wave of suffering onto Superman’s people, which then sparks something a revolution that the iconic superhero will then help navigate. “Since his initial defeat on Warworld, Superman’s been playing the long game, and we’ve been seeing the birth of a revolution,” Johnson said. “Many of the people who have been living in slavery there for their entire lives, who have been brainwashed into worshipping Mongul, and who were initially not happy to see Superman, have come around and now support him, putting us squarely in the “Revolution” phase of the Warworld Saga.”
Justice League #75 comes from Joshua Williamson, penciler Rafa Sandoval, inker Jordi Tarragona, colorist Matt Herms and letterer Josh Reed. In the issue, the entire Justice League are murdered by Pariah and the Great Darkness apart from one member — Black Adam. The events of Justice League #75 lead directly into DC’s Dark Crisis event, which officially launches on May 7 with Free Comic Book Day 2022: Dark Crisis – Special Edition #0.
