Following its discontinuation of a similar loophole with PS Now, Sony has disabled stacked subscriptions for PlayStation Plus until June.
Following a loophole weeks ago which allowed players to pay a discounted price on the upcoming PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony has apparently closed PlayStation owners’ ability to redeem pre-paid vouchers for the current Plus subscription.
Several owners have questioned PlayStation customer support about the issue. According to Eurogamer, Sony informed customers that they had “temporarily” disabled the ability to stack Plus subscriptions ahead of the revamped PlayStation Plus’ global release in June. Current holders of PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus subscriptions will be transferred to the new service once it goes live this summer, including those with years’ worth of stacked vouchers paid at the current price. The company announced yesterday that they will take the longest-running active subscription held by individuals when setting the converted membership’s end date, allowing players to essentially stock up on the regular Plus service now for a lesser cost than the upcoming version.
“I have checked the voucher and your account and can conclude that as of now there is a temporarily deactivated function for PS Plus/PS Now subscriptions which does not allow for stacking of either membership on already active memberships,” one customer was told via PlayStation Support. “This is only temporary and as soon as we have more information about we will let our players know, for more information regarding news for the new launch of our service please check out our blog.”
Numerous other customers have reported similar responses, finding that their vouchers cannot be redeemed. This is also true for Plus subscribers attempting to continue their membership before they run out of subscription time without attempting to stack them. Official representatives from neither Sony nor PlayStation have responded to the issue.
The situation mirrored that of a few weeks ago when players discovered a similar loophole. Late last month, Sony revealed the revamped PlayStation Plus as a competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscription. On hearing the announcement that current PlayStation Now subscribers would see their membership transferred to PS Plus, players stocked up on annual memberships for $59.99 a year. With PlayStation Plus Premium’s price currently set to run $119.99 a year on release, that gave players a 50% savings on the new service for however many years they staked. Within hours of discovering the loophole, PlayStation discontinued annual subscriptions to PS Now.
Sony currently plans to unveil the new subscription service in most of the world on different dates in June, with Asia, sans Japan, seeing the service slightly earlier, around May 23.
