A recent leak suggests the next instalment in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise may be a virtual reality crossover titled Assassin’s Creed Nexus.
A leak may have just revealed a handful of details about the next major title in the Assassin’s Creed series.
On April 23, Reddit user Echiketto claimed to be in possession of a full build of a virtual reality Assassin’s Creed game titled Assassin’s Creed Nexus. In their post, Echiketto was able to include a 42-second video that included the game’s title screen and some UI elements. They did not include any gameplay footage, but was able to outline some details in the post’s comments.
According to Echiketto, the game will put players in the shoes of a handful of different assassins throughout the series’ history, starting with fan-favorite Assassin Ezio. Reportedly, switching between characters will not occur freely and specific assassins will only show up in specific missions. The only differences between assassins are apparently the model of the player character’s hands and the way NPCs address them. Ezio’s first mission will apparently take place in Venice and is titled “The Sword of Ezio.”
Missions are apparently very straightforward, level-based affairs, with no open world. They reportedly run for roughly 20 minutes each. The combat is timing-based and, in traditional Assassin’s Creed fashion, accompanied by stealth and parkour sequences. Stealth is apparently heavily simplified and executed through a built-in crouch button. According to Echiketto, “Being discovered isn’t really punished as enemies approach you one at a time.” Missions are separated by brief pre-rendered cutscenes outlining the narrative, and the game does not feature side missions.
While Echiketto played the game on Oculus Quest 2 and initially assumed that this would be its exclusive platform, comments on the post from other users suggest the game has also been tested on Windows 10, indicating a PC build may be in development. Echiketto identified the game as “higher-tier VR,” likening the title to Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, another virtual reality spinoff to a popular franchise. They also stated that lackluster combat and stealth made the title look “like a cashgrab.”
Although both will reportedly feature characters from throughout the franchise’s history, Assassin’s Creed Nexus doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Ubisoft’s previously-announced live-service title, Assassin’s Creed Infinity. The game is also apparently unrelated to the other recently-leaked standalone Assassin’s Creed title, currently known as Assassin’s Creed Rift.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus is expected to release sometime within the next twelve months.
