The following contains spoilers for This Is Us, Season 6, Episode 13, “Day of the Wedding,” which aired Tuesday, April 19 on NBC.
Kate’s second wedding to Phillip is full of love and family drama. On the lighter side of the family drama is Madison and Beth’s hunt for the identity of Kevin’s secret romantic partner with whom he hooked up the night before the wedding. While they are getting ready for the wedding, the ladies stumble upon evidence of Kevin’s romantic fling and spend the rest of the day trying to solve the mystery. The episode ends with three prime suspects, with Kevin still yet to confirm who he spent the evening with. So let’s break down the suspects and figure out what is known so far about this mystery woman before her identity is likely confirmed in the upcoming episode.
Kevin’s Childhood Sweetheart and Ex-Wife Sophie Is Suspect Number One
Sophie was Kate’s friend first when they were very little kids, though it wasn’t much later that Kevin and Sophie became childhood sweethearts. They were together all through school and got married while Sophie was still in college and Kevin was trying to make it as an actor. Their marriage failed when Kevin cheated on her — a breakup explored earlier this season. They tried to make it work again as adults, but during their reconciliation, Kevin hit rock bottom with his alcoholism, and they broke up again.
Sophie has since gotten married, but she was in attendance at Kate’s wedding because the two women have repaired their fractured friendship recently. At the wedding, Sophie and Kevin had an awkward yet charged exchange witnessed by Madison and Beth. So even though Sophie is married — as far as the show has confirmed — there is still a chance she is Kevin’s mystery lover based on her history with Kevin and their interactions at the wedding.
A Brand New Character on This Is Us Is Suspect Number Two
Kevin has had quite a few relationships over the course of This Is Us, but there’s still room for one new relationship to blossom for him and his future. Audiences know he is married by the time the family gathers around Rebecca’s deathbed, but since his wife’s identity has yet to be revealed, there is still a chance it’s a new character. At Kate’s wedding, Kevin gets pulled aside by the wedding singer to speak about the night before the wedding. Little else is known about her or her relationship with Kevin, but Madison and Beth did find a poem in Kevin’s room. The poem may be song lyrics, which may point directly to the wedding singer as Kevin’s mystery lover.
Cassidy and Kevin May Have Hooked Up Again, Making Her Suspect Number Three
Cassidy has turned down Kevin’s romantic advances once already this season, but she was his plus one to Kate’s wedding. While the official story is that she has joined him as just a friend, there is no denying the chemistry between them. Plus her rejection of his advances came about while he was still a little lost and she was struggling with her own issues. Time has passed since then, meaning that by the time Phillip and Kate get married, they may be in a better position for their relationship to finally hit the next level.
Additionally, Madison and Beth found a woman’s shawl in Kevin’s room and claim it as a key piece of evidence to the identity of Kevin’s mystery lover. That wrap is revealed to belong to Cassidy. It’s this piece of evidence that has Madison and Beth so convinced the mystery woman is Cassidy for much of the episode. Though Sophie and the wedding singer make compelling suspects as well, which complicates the evidence in favor of Cassidy. So, Kevin’s mystery lover is still yet to be revealed, but there are some leading suspects, each with some compelling evidence in their favor.
