Jesse Pinkman actor Aaron Paul had to beg El Camino’s crew to film a certain scene in the film that captured his character’s humanity.
Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul revealed that he persuaded the crew of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie to shoot a certain scene that showed a glimpse of the heart of his character, Jesse Pinkman.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paul shared that he loves the scene in El Camino where Jesse turns off his parents’ dripping kitchen faucet after convincing them to leave the house so he could steal a few firearms from their safe. It demonstrated that, despite his manipulation, Jesse still cared for his mother and father. “He loves them deep down, and when he called them, he knew [that that] was the last time he was going to speak with them. So it was such a beautiful moment,” Paul said.
The actor also revealed he had to fight tooth and nail to keep another moment in the movie that showed Jesse’s humanity. “When we were shooting El Camino, there was a night shoot that was right before he blew up [Kandy Welding Co.],” Paul explained. “And there’s a scene where he’s waiting for the girls to leave, and then he sees a beetle and picks it up and looks at it. It was a throwback to Breaking Bad’s ‘Peekaboo.’ And the first AD came up to me and was like, ‘We’re gonna scrap that little scene. We’re gonna head to this other shot. We’re running out of time.’ And I just begged them to keep that in there because I just loved that moment so much. I was like, ‘Look, let’s just set up the camera. We’ll do one take. Let’s just do it.’ And so we did and it made it in. I just love those little moments that peek inside Jesse’s heart.”
Serving as a sequel and epilogue to the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie centers on Jesse Pinkman as he confronts the mistakes of his past after leaving his life as a kingpin of a crystal meth empire alongside former teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston). Much like its predecessor, El Camino was received positively by critics and audiences, with Paul’s performance especially being praised. Paul and Cranston recently revisited the Breaking Bad universe as Jesse and Walter are set to appear sometime during the sixth and last season of the prequel series Better Call Saul currently airing on AMC.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is available to stream now on Netflix, along with all five seasons of Breaking Bad.
