The Winchesters will revisit some key moments from Supernatural lore, but it will also surprise audiences by expanding the series’ mythos when it comes to John and Mary.
“That’s kind of the exciting thing, in my opinion, is that the waypoints or the tentpoles that were established on the mothership, as we lovingly call it, those will get touched on. But we’ll get to those waypoints in a way that we probably didn’t expect,” Jensen Ackles told TV Line. “And that’s what we’re really having fun with… the story is coming together. It’s not the washed version. It’s not the sugar-coated version of how mom and dad met. This is like what really happened.”
For the series, Ackles will narrate as his Supernatural character, Dean. As he learns more about his parents and how they came to meet and begin hunting monsters, the audience will also learn even more about the pair and the history that led to the hit series. “We do play into the moments that were discussed and that were talked about [on Supernatural], just maybe in a slightly varied way that seems like, ‘Whoa, wait, we knew that happened, but [we] didn’t know that’s why it happened or that’s how it happened,'” Ackles said.
Announced in June 2021, The Winchesters landed a pilot order from the CW in February 2022. It’s the network’s third attempt at a Supernatural spinoff and may finally be the one that makes it to air, especially now that the “mothership” show has ended.
“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?'” Ackles said at the time. “I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”
Despite Ackles’ excitement to explore Sam and Dean’s lineage, the actor admitted that he had some doubts about the spinoff’s viability. “To be honest, I was like, ‘I don’t know if we can do this,'” Ackles said of The Winchesters. “It took [writer] Robbie [Thompson] and me sitting down going like, ‘Well, we know we have to do this, and we know we have to do that, but if we just connect those dots with a straight line, that’s not entertaining. That’s boring. That’s a simple story. If we connect those dots in a much crazier, wild Supernatural way, then we’ve got a show.’ So that’s what we’ve been doing.”
The Winchesters does not yet have a release date.
