DC Comics’ Nightwing #87 by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo is a unique issue in that it will play out as a single, 22-page connecting image.
While comic book readers are sure to be familiar with connecting covers, this December, artist Bruno Redondo is taking things one step further by crafting an entire connecting issue of Nightwing.
Written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Redondo, DC Comics’ Nightwing #87 is scheduled to hit comic shops Tuesday, Dec. 21. As reported by Polygon, the issue will consist of 22 connecting pages, with a series of double-page splashes uniting to form one extra-wide image. “This broke my brain, but we went for it,” Taylor said on Twitter. In [Nightwing #87], there are no panels. It’s one continuous image. The genius [Bruno Redondo] has been working so hard [and] making something incredible. Check it [and] preorder now.”
This seems to be a natural progression for Redondo, who — throughout his and Taylor’s run on Nightwing — has utilized “ghost” images of main protagonist Dick Grayson in order to convey the former Robin’s exceptional acrobatic skills. (Basically, imagine if the cover of Nightwing #83 was a full-length comic.)
Redondo has also crafted two covers for Nightwing #87: the issue’s main cover, plus variant breaking down Nightwing’s costume design. The issue features an additional variant cover by Jamal Campbell, which stars Dick Grayson alongside his fan-favorite dog, Haley/Bitewing.
Written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Bruno Redondo, Nightwing #87 goes on sale Dec. 21 from DC Comics.
