Leading up to the film’s release, little has been known regarding the plot other than it being a psychological horror film of sorts hailing from the Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan director. That enough was reason to see the film for some, while for others, it was the impressive cast which not only included Lawrence, but also the likes of Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer. It seemed like the perfect formula for a successful film, and yet, fans that decided to check out the feature this weekend were left angered by what they considered to be a waste of time.

The film, which is about a couple’s life upended by the arrival of strange people in their home, has seen numerous fans take to Rotten Tomatoes to stress their frustrations with the feature. While there are some positive reviews throughout the eighteen pages of audience reviews, most of them give the film anywhere between one star to half a star, with viewers often criticizing the third act where they noted the film truly began to fall apart; others talked about how they had to take to Google after their showing to try and make sense of what they’d just watched.

Interestingly, while the film has scored a 69% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes allowing it to be certified fresh, the feature has received a terrible F from CinemaScore and only on track to earn around $7.8 million for thee weekend — giving It an easy repeat at the box office in its second outing.

Although it’s hard to know just where mother! went wrong, it’s clear the film is a rare misfire for Lawrence who has tended to stick to Oscar-bait films outside of her role as Mystique in Fox’s X-Men films.

mother!, which was written and directed by Aronofsky, is in theaters now.
