The Omega Rangers’ strangest ally has just been given an power boost and fixes the biggest mistake that a diety made.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #10, available now from Boom! Studios.
The Power Rangers have made plenty of mistakes in their time as super-powered teenagers with attitude, though most often they are calculated and with only the best of intentions. With stakes as high as they always seem to be and so few people to turn to when they need it most, it’s understandable that not every decision the heroes make will work out as well as they had hoped. Of course, it’s still something of a surprise when the Rangers’ own mentors make grievous lapses in judgment, especially when those situations turn out deadly. Miraculously one of the greatest mistakes in the Rangers’ history has just been fixed, and the Blue Emissary’s resolution to that which led to their own demise is truly shocking.
While the Omega Rangers have been dealing with the latest batch of refugees to arrive on Safe Haven, as well as the rejection of the last living god they have to turn to, their ferocious feline companion Yale has taken the opportunity to make friends with some of the younger locals. Not all of the children are so kind to Yale, however, and one particularly cruel kid goes so far as to goad his friends into harassing the overly friendly creature. Yale has long been something of a champion for the small ever since his days as a runt cut off from the rest of his litter. Over the years Yale developed a fascination with protecting those who cannot protect themselves, especially small children. Never one to give up on those in need, Yale even returns to the children who had thrown rocks at him when they are attacked by one of the more monstrous inhabitants of Safe Haven. Just as Yale has watched over these young refugees, someone else has been watching over Yale. And, as revealed in the pages of Power Rangers #10 by Ryan Parrott, Rachel Wagner, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, the impression he’s made has led to the best decision that the Blue Emissary will ever make.
The Emissary’s voice leads Yale to a temple, and within its walls to a chest that contains the miraculously repaired Blue Omega Morpher. When the Blue Emissary had originally chosen Kiya to act as the Blue Omega Ranger, they had no idea that decision would lead to their own tragic demise. Kiya’s trauma over Lord Drakkon’s campaign of terror resurfaced once the Blue Emissary revealed to her that they had given the White Light to this reality’s Tommy Oliver. In a fit of fear and rage, Kiya murdered the Blue Emissary before embarking on her own campaign to eradicate the Power Rangers entirely. Unfortunately, Kiya’s betrayal was one that the Blue Emissary likely should have seen coming even before choosing her to take a place alongside the Omegas, or at least a possibility that should have been considered. Now, after spending so much time observing Yale, the Blue Emissary has discovered a new champion, one who has no ill will towards those who choose not to actively do harm. Yale is the Emissary’s new chosen one, and they couldn’t have picked anyone better.
Yale has never been selfish, nor cruel, nor uncaring. Yale has survived against the odds and risen to become the unlikeliest of heroes. Ever fearless, there is no question that Yale won’t hesitate to lead the charge against the forces of Dark Specter if he has to. Then again, there is always the chance that the Blue Emissary will do so themselves, considering the fact that all of this means their consciousness at the very least survived the assault by Kiya.
Whatever the extent of the power imparted on Yale is doesn’t matter nearly as much as where it has come from, just as the tainted legacy of that power doesn’t matter nearly as much as the one that Yale will forge for it from this point forward. The Omega Rangers’ feline friend certainly wasn’t an obvious choice as the Blue Emissary’s next herald, but he was absolutely the correct one.
