Kingpin’s Bloody Future Is Bad News for Wilson Fisk

A preview of Daredevil’s future hints that Wilson Fisk may be getting back to his old ways and the Kingpin, and he’s about to unleash his fury.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1, available now from Marvel.

The rise and fall of Wilson Fisk as the Kingpin of Crime has happened plenty of times in the Marvel Universe already. Fisk has lost and rebuilt his empire with surprising regularity, but things have changed since he traded one empire for another by becoming the Mayor of Marvel’s New York City. Of course, he never truly left his criminal enterprises behind, Fisk passed on his old moniker. But now, it seems like its time for Firsk to reclaim his Kingpin mantle, and that return could come at the expense of his political career.

In the final story of Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1 by Chip Zdarsky, Greg Smallwood and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Jessica Jones makes a startling discovery during her latest investigation. Her fellow P.I. friend Joey has been viciously attacked in his own office, and with his dying breath, he warns Jessica that the man behind the assault was Fisk. Joey’s death marks the seventh private investigator to be killed in as many days, itself an indicator of just how desperate Fisk has become.

Kingpin Wilson Fisk

While overlooking the city, Wilson Fisk monologues to himself, thinking himself to be an animal. He thinks of the ways in which he has restrained the incredible violence he is capable of and considers that a gift he has given to the people living their lives beneath him. This is far from the typically calm, cool and collected demeanor that Fisk is known for. Gone are the suit and tie, replaced with one of the signature white coats which have become almost synonymous with the character. Even Fisk’s stature has returned that of an imposing stoic, at least for as long as he can manage to keep his composure.

What was once a picturesque skyline rested just outside the windows of Fisk’s office is abruptly engulfed in raging flames. When Fisk looks down at his own hands they are suddenly covered in blood, and as he sinks to his knees in anguish it is revealed just whose blood it is all over him. Iron Man and Emma Frost are just a few of the dead heroes strewn about the room behind the Kingpin. Whether this is a vision of the future or one born out of sheer stress, there is no question that it is a dark omen for the days to come.

Fisk’s monologue is heatedly pointed at Daredevil, blaming the Man Without Fear for having ripped the doors off of his proverbial cage. Whatever it is that Matt Murdock did to send the Kingpin into such a blind fury had to have cut deep, and it’s hard to imagine anything hitting Fisk harder than having his grasp over the city ripped away from him. And if Matt Murdock really can take away Fisk’s greatest achievement, there’s no telling how much the rest of the Marvel Universe will have to suffer.
