Tony Stark is a stranger in a strange land in Christopher Cantwell and Cafu’s Iron Man #10, but he reconnects with an old acquaintance, Avro-X.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Iron Man #10 by Christopher Cantwell, CAFU, Frank D’armata and VC’s Joe Caramagna, on sale now.
Tony Stark was working to stop Korvac from brainwashing the people of Earth when he was suddenly transported to a mysterious planet. Now in Iron Man #10, Tony tries to make sense of his new surroundings where he has been welcomed by an assortment of beings from all over the galaxy. He’s surprised to encounter his old enemies Stilt Man and Ultimo and to reunite with an old colleague Avro-X, Marvel’s forgotten armored hero.
Avro-X, also known as Colin Richard, first appeared in Ken Steacy’s 1989 Marvel Fanfare #44 at the International Robotics Expo in Latveria. He attended the robotics convention representing the Canadian military to show off their new armored suits. He and Iron Man exchanged pleasantries before Doctor Doom used a computer virus to make Colin’s suit malfunction and disrupt the conference. Stark was able to save his armored colleague and stop Doom from doing any real harm, earning the respect and gratitude of Colin. After the robotics expo, Avro-X went back to serving in the Canadian military. He didn’t appear in the Marvel Universe again until meeting Iron Man again in Meggido.
Aside from battling gigantic monsters, Colin Richard works to make Tony feel at home on the strange planet. They share food and even play baseball together. Iron Man certainly isn’t happy about being stranded on a foreign planet while Korvac attempts to enslave the human race in a Borg-like hivemind, but it is clear that he finds some solace in reconnecting with Avro-X. Colin Richard’s reappearance in space may provide the emotional boost and pragmatic assistance Iron Man needs to escape Meggido and stop Korvac. The long-lost hero’s reentry into the Marvel Universe can only spell good news for the people of Earth and Meggido.
