To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Marvel will launch a series of variant covers by InHyuk Lee, spotlighting its Asian heroes.
Marvel Comics is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a new set of variant covers by InHyuk Lee.
The covers feature Lee’s take on some of Marvel’s heroes who are of Asian descent, including Shang-Chi and Silk. The covers will blend the heroes’ current outfits with “bold streetwear” and “traditional cultural elements,” such as Silk sporting a jacket that matches her superhero costume and Jimmy Woo wearing a snazzy suit. Altogether, Lee plans to release eight AAPI variant covers. Lee has provided variant covers for a number of Marvel titles, including Venom and Immortal Hulk.
“I’m very proud to draw these eight ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERTIAGE VARIANT COVERS showing the iconic Asian heroes of the Marvel universe,” Lee said. “Silk, Ms. Marvel, Psylocke, Shang-Chi… I love all these heroes so much and since I’m an illustrator and character designer, I proposed to renovate their outfits in a modern or tech-wear style, and Marvel liked my suggestion. When Emily Newcomen asked me about these covers, I had to accept despite my busy schedule because it was so meaningful. I’ve been working with Marvel for 10 years now and I’m happy to say we can always have fun working together.”
Marvel also plans to release Marvel’s Voices: Identity one-shot in August, which features Asian creative talent tackling Marvel’s Asian heroes. The one-shot follows in the footsteps of other entries in the Marvel’s Voices anthology series, including Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices and Marvel’s Voices: Legacy.
