Thanos Gains a Powerful New Ally From Marvel’s Eternals

In the latest issue of Eternals, Thanos finds an unlikely ally in his murderous rampage against the gods of the Marvel Universe.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Eternals #4 by Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, Matthew Wilson and VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

The Eternals have been recently dealing with a new form of an old threat. Thanos, the Mad Titan, has not only been hunting down and murdering the Eternals, but he has cut them off from being resurrected upon death. On top of that, but there is a traitor in the Eternals’ midst, one that has enabled Thanos to attack them at home even when they’re supposed to be untouchable. For most of them, this betrayal is unforgiveable. For one Eternal, it’s even more unforgiveable that he wasn’t the first one Thanos thought of when he was looking for someone to betray the demigods.

The Eternals Thena and Kingo have travelled to the Arctic to visit their city of Polaria buried deep below the tundra. Meeting them there is Druig, one of the most conniving of their kind, and the one they believe to most likely be their betrayer. Not only is Druig unworthy of most of his fellow Eternals’ trust, but with the Machine unable to resurrect their slain leader Zuras, Druig has become next in line to take control of Polaria. As bad as it all might look, a surprise attack from Thanos himself ensures that Druig is not the traitor among them. Unfortunately, Druig himself is quite displeased by the notion, and speaks to Thanos personally not long after the attack.

First introduced in 1977’s Eternals #11 by Jack Kirby, Druig is the son of Valkin, as well as Ikaris’ cousin. Though Druig’s scheming and power hungry ways were always a disappointment to his family, they never held him accountable for any of his actions, which has led to far more trouble than Druig might be worth on several occasions.

When Druig unleashed a dangerous Deviant upon the world, the combined might of the other Eternals and Thor were the only thing that could put it down. When the other Eternals lost their memories, Druig took it upon himself to try and brainwash as many as he could in order to build his own loyal army of demigods. And now, when his brethren are being slaughtered mercilessly, Druig is has decided to make a play for power by selling out everyone he possibly can.

When Thanos attacked, Druig reached out to the Mad Titan telepathically, ensuring that Thanos understood his treacherous intent. Not long after the skirmish in Polaria, Druig meets with Thanos, offended that he wasn’t the first one Thanos had thought to come to.

A treacherous traitor at heart, Druig is willing to help Thanos in any way he can if it means securing more power for himself. With any luck, the Eternals will figure this out sooner rather than later. Considering Druig’s track record, it would come as no surprise to find that the demigods have already prepared for such an event.
