In Tales from the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death, it seemed as if the story would be just about Klaus being exiled from Sir Reginald’s school and going on benders in Hollywood as he tried to replace his family with various substances. Little by little, though, Klaus has been setting up his own destiny as he’s made his own new friends and enemies.
Now, as You Look Like Death #6 wraps this chapter of his topsy-turvy life, we discover what Klaus’ altruistic plan was all along and how it shows how much heart he really has.
Klaus tricked the possessed Viv into shooting a movie at the purgatorial Void. He’s got the Hollywood Gods there with him, mystical beings who run the entertainment industry as producers, plus to save his own skin from a debt he owes, he uses the Shivers, a vampire chimpanzee as the lead.
And as the tape rolls, Klaus is able to use his abilities to channel Abagail, Shivers’ former lover, whom he tried to turn into a vampire, only to bite down too hard. He killed her and since then, she’s been in Purgatory as she can’t enter Heaven with so much hate in her heart. Klaus sensed this, though, and after putting her soul into Viv’s body, she lets go and forgives him. With that Abagail ascends, leaving the Shivers bitter, but at least with a sense of closure.
Ironically, this also allows Klaus to screw Viv over because her body isn’t accustomed to housing angels. She’s had a spider-demon in her since she killed her kid to advance her movie career years ago, so Klaus simply wants her true form to unravel in front of everyone. It’s the ultimate shame that will blacklist her from working in Hollywood every again.
As it unfolds, Klaus holds the Hollywood Gods back as he’s getting amazing footage and eventually, he uses the power of the Void to suck her to Hell. However, it happens with the help of Lyle, his best friend. Lyle was stuck there after neglecting his family for years, but as he tries to protect Klaus from Viv, the Void’s agents realize he really is a good man who regrets his mistakes. As a result, Lyle ascends as well, with Klaus proud to see his friend get a happy ending.
The Hollywood Gods are pleased with what has transpired, and weeks later, “Vivian: The Ghost Portrait” is put out. It rakes in big money and when Klaus gets his cut, rather than invest in more movies, he decides to binge on narcotics. He even gets a call to come home but refuses, insisting he’s happy where he is — with a case full of cash and lots of illicit substances. This reinforces that, while Klaus is a good man, he still can’t kick his bad habits, which is why he meets God later in Dallas to truly assess his soul.
