It Sequel Will Explore Pennywise’s Secret Origin

The upcoming movie adaptation It, a reboot of Stephen King’s horror novel, arrives in theaters later this week, so the film’s cast is understandably hitting the press circuit. Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård is among those discussing the film, and in a recent interview, he opened up about the plans for the movie’s sequel. Specifically, Skarsgård says the second installment in the planned duology will go more into the origins of the terrifying clown.

“We’re in the early stages and I’m talking to Andy about it and figuring out what It will be,” Skarsgård told Metro UK. “It’s a different story, but I’m excited to delve in deeper to the character as there’s more exploration for who Pennywise is…And I think that’s what I wanted and that’s where I want to go for the second one, to delve into the psychological and metaphysical spaces of this transdimensional being.”

The second It movie will shift the narrative 30 years into the future, with the kids of the book now grown up and having flashbacks to 1989. Skarsgård is certain that the crew will have to “raise the ante” and avoid repeating themselves, something that he’s very much looking forward to.

Based on Stephen King’s classic novel of the same name, It stars Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff, Nicholas Hamilton, Owen Teague and Logan Thompson. The film floats its way into theaters on Sept. 8.
