Inhumans Disappoints at the Box Office

Early projections (via Deadline) suggest Marvel Television and ABC Studios’ Inhumans will be a disappointment at the box office as the feature-length pilot makes its debut on IMAX screens this Labour Day Weekend. The Marvel TV effort is opening up in the third week of Hitman’s Bodyguard’s run at the box office, and still won’t be able to dethrone the Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson-led action hit.

It seems Inhumans’ negative critical response could be reflected in its box office showing. The 1-hour and 20-minute pilot episode was originally set to rake in $2 million from IMAX locations across North America, but after merely taking in $360k on Friday, it looks as though the latest Marvel effort will only make $1.28 million by the time the Holiday weekend comes to a close. By contrast, Game of Thrones’ “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children,” which were also released in IMAX, earned $2 million in a week’s run. The Inhumans pilot is expected to finish way behind late-summer fare such as Hitman’s Bodyguard, Leap and Anabelle: Creation, at the box office.

The series’ official synopsis states:

After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.

The Inhumans debuted back in 1965 in the pages of Fantastic Four #45. Since then, the Royal Family – featuring characters such as Black Bolt, Medusa, and the lovable dog Lockjaw – have been a staple in Marvel Comics since they were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

The first two episodes of Marvel’s Inhumans debuted in IMAX theaters on Sept. 1, kicking off a two-week run. On Sept. 29 the show will make its broadcast debut on ABC. The network will show the eight-episode first season of Inhumans in its entirety, including content from the first two episodes not seen in the IMAX run. The drama stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus the Mad, Serinda Swan as Queen Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Mike Moh as Triton and Sonya Balmores as Auran.
