Carol Danvers has just landed herself decades in the future and is given a less than warm welcome by the child of an unlikely pair of veteran X-Men.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Captain Marvel #22 by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, Tamra Bonvillain, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.
Carol Danvers hasn’t had an easy go of things the past few months. After taking up the role of the Accuser, she had to hide her Kree half-sister Lauri-Ell on Earth while clearing her name. Carol also had to use the Universal Weapon to stop another alien invasion that was threatening the galaxy. Needless to say, her decision to hand the mantle of the Accuser on to Lauri-Ell gave her some much-needed breathing room. However, things never stay calm for long in the life of an Avenger.
After being thrown into the world of Captain Marvel: The End in Captain Marvel #22, Carol Danvers is welcomed by a group of heroes that includes some new faces like Sora, the heroic daughter of the X-Men’s Forge and Kwannon, the hero currently known as Psylocke.
After Carol is spirited away into the future, she awakens to a snowy landscape and blasts Fantomex-5 away from herself but is caught off guard by a psy-blade that flies through the back of her skull. The fight ends almost as quickly as it began, and no blood has to be shed when intervention comes from someone who recognizes Captain Marvel. That person is a gruff looking man by the name of Gerry Drew, but Carol doesn’t understand, seeing as the Gerry Drew she knows is just a baby. The good news is that Gerry is all grown up — the bad news is that Carol has been launched over thirty years into a future Manhattan, and it doesn’t look good.
Among the group that finds Carol is a permanently diamond Emma Frost, Gerry Drew, Fantomex-5, Katie Barton, and two other entirely new faces. One is the daughter of James Rhodes, which comes as a terrible shock to Carol, considering the woman isn’t her daughter also, which does not bode well for her and James’ relationship should she be able to return to her own time. The second newcomer, as Emma explains, is Sora, the daughter of Forge and Kwannon. Sora clearly inherited her mother’s psychic abilities, including being able to form psy-blades.
