Dark Nights: Death Metal and its precursor has centered around the concept of evil Batmen, but there’s one evil Batman that’s almost been forgotten.
The essence of Dark Nights: Metal and Dark Nights: Death Metal has been rooted in the idea of a Batman, or several Batmen, turned evil. One of the writers involved with DC’s reality-altering event has revealed that the original evil Batman will have a role in the upcoming one-shot, Dark Nights Death Metal: Multiverse’s End #1.
“The one fanboy geek angle that I was very excited about in this issue is that, in an event that’s overrun with evil Batmen, the character who I really wanted to get his point of view was Owlman, the original evil Batman of the DC Multiverse,” said writer James Tynion IV, at Saturday’s virtual DC FanDome event. “[Owlman] is really, really pissed off that there are all of these evil Batmen overwhelming this Earth, the original center of the multiverse.”
Owlman in fact was the DC Multiverse’s original evil version of Batman, first appearing in 1964’s Justice League of America #29 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky. This issue introduced Owlman, as well as the entire Crime Syndicate of America and their home world of Earth-3. The CSA was an evil version of the JLA, and was part of the novelty of Earth-3, with its moral reversal of that world’s characters. Those characters, though, have been absent thus far from Dark Nights: Death Metal.
“We realized we needed to actually show what’s happened outside our universe in the multiverse,” Tynion said. “We needed to show the devastation that’s being wreaked across the entire multiverse.”
Dark Nights Death Metal: Multiverse’s End #1, by Tynion and Juan Gedeon, goes on sale September 29.
