Bryan Cranston Still Wants to Play X-Men’s Mister Sinister

After five seasons of playing high school chemistry teacher turned drug lord Walter White on Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston wouldn’t mind portraying a villain once again and he has someone very specific in mind he’d like to play: X-Men villain Mister Sinister.

The Emmy Award-winning actor was asked what kind of villain he’d like to play next and started with a vague description before revealing his not-so-secret hopes of portraying the longtime Marvel villain.

“I want to play an antagonist a fraction smarter than the protagonist, never dumbed down to give the hero an easy win. That’s frustrating and boring to watch,” began Cranston in an interview with Screen Geek before stopping playing coy. “Mister Sinister was the character I was thinking about.”

Cranston had initially expressed interest in playing Nathaniel Essex on a panel at New York Comic-Con 2015. While the character’s introduction has been teased since 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse in a post-credits scene, the villain has yet to make an arrival in Fox’s X-Men films. Jon Hamm was reportedly cast to portray the character in next year’s The New Mutants but the villain was cut after the ending was extensively reworked in post-production.

Still, Cranston hopes to portray the character someday precisely because no other actor has played the character in live-action before.

“I don’t want to do a character that has been done several times before,” admitted Cranston. “I don’t want to be compared like ‘Well, his Commissioner Gordon was yada yada yada.’ I don’t want to do that. “.”
