Netflix Cancels Marvel’s Luke Cage

Another Netflix MCU series bites the dust, as Luke Cage will not be returning for a third season.

Despite the return of Daredevil this weekend for its third season, the Hero of Harlem wasn’t so lucky. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful,” said Marvel in a statement, “to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Luke Cage’s second season arrived this past summer and introduced Bushmaster as the primary antagonist, along with a team-up between the title hero and Iron Fist and the debut of Misty Knight’s robotic arm. The reason for the cancellation, supposedly, boils down to creative differences, though showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had previously said he had plans for the series if it returned. The series’ second season saw Luke become a crime boss after Mariah Dillard died and gave everything she owned to him in her will in the finale.

This is the second cancellation for Marvel, as last week saw the surprise axing of Iron Fist, which had its own Season 2 debut last month. Though Daredevil’s future is uncertain, Jessica Jones and The Punisher will both return for new seasons next year.
