Earlier this week, a rumor suggested the title for the (still untitled) Avengers 4 was actually Avengers: Annihilation. Shortly after that rumor surfaced, actor Mark Ruffalo appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the My First Time campaign and “accidentally” let some Avengers 4 spoilers, which were subsequently bleeped, slip. However, thanks to one fan, we may now know what Ruffalo said.
According to Anton Volkov on Twitter, after putting the interview in Audition and removing the bleep using the spectrogram editor, rather than hearing Avengers: Annihilation, it appears Ruffalo actually said “The Last Avenger.”

Whether or not this will actually be the title remains to be seen. Volkov casted doubt on whether Ruffalo had let the actual title slip in a subsequent tweet, writing, “The Last Avengers could make sense as a real title but it’d be a bit weird and on the nose.” Here Volkov wrote “The Last Avengers,” rather than “The Last Avenger.” However, based on the audio, the pluralization is likely a typo on Volkov’s part.
It’s worth noting that this title is still far from official, especially considering Ruffalo trolled fans at other points during the interview. Still, Avengers: The Last Avenger could make sense as the title; after all, it’s possible that we’ll see a new team takeover by the end of the film with most of the original team saying goodbye. For now, we still have some time before Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers actually unveil the title as the focus is currently on Captain Marvel. But for the time being, we at least have another contender for the title in the mix.
