Marvel Announces Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Ongoing

Marvel Comics promises readers “the most local Peter Parker ever” with the announcement of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Set to launch in 2019, this new series written by Tom Taylor (X-Men Red, Injustice) with art by Juann Cabal (All-New Wolverine, X-23) will revolve around Peter Parker as he is faced with the age-old problem of having to balance his superhero life with his personal one.

Between costumed supervillains, property damage, making rent and trying to be the best neighbor possible both in and out of costume, Peter Parker will definitely have a lot on plate come January (but what else is new?).

This will also mark writer Tom Taylor’s very first time writing a Spider-Man story, a task he is very excited to undertake.

“Honestly, it’s amazing (pun intended… eventually… after I noticed it.) [Spider-Man editor] Nick Lowe contacted me in a period where I was weighing up a lot of exciting writing offers, but as soon as I saw Spider-Man in the email, there was nothing else in my mind,” said Taylor in an interview with Marvel.com. “Spidey was my first Marvel hero and a character I’ve always wanted an opportunity to write. As a fan, this is a bit of a dream come true.”

“With a lot of heroes, they’re most heroic when they’re in their suit and hide away their nature the rest of the time. But Peter’s humanity and kindness isn’t ever hidden,” Taylor explained. “He wants to do the right thing by everyone no matter whether he’s on the ground or swinging through the sky. I’ve always loved when Peter Parker is at his most relatable. Sure, he’s a guy who saves the world, but he’s still struggling to pay his bills with his housemates. That’s the heart of the series.”

“We’re going to tell some big stories here, and introduce an all-new hero, but it’s all about the micro,” he continued. “This is Peter finding adventure in his apartment building, a few doors down.”

Working with Taylor on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be artist Juann Cabal, who previously worked closely with Taylor on All-New Wolverine. Moreover, the pair will also be joined on this new Spidey tale by colorist and fellow Wolverine collaborator Nolan Woodard.

“When Nick asked who I’d like to work with on this, the first person I said was Juann Cabal,” Taylor shared. “Juann is one of those storytellers who thinks outside the box. He puts a million Easter eggs in and does fascinating things with the storytelling, which then stretch and challenge me as a writer… I also have to say the second name I gave Nick Lowe was Nolan Woodard. Really glad he could join us on this. Great to have this band back together.”
