After years of speculation, fans were thrilled to finally hear that Marvel Studios was pressing forward with a Black Widow movie with Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as the titular character. Now, a potential plot synopsis has leaked online, shedding light as to what the prequel film will be about.
According to a Black Widow fan site, “At birth the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action movies to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. The standalone film will find Romanoff living in the United States 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union.”

This does fit the character’s past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could well feature the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, as they appear in the ’90s-era Captain Marvel. This also allows the studio the chance to work in Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and handle how Widow got recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D.
Cate Shortland was recently announced as director, with the film’s most recent draft written by Jac Schaeffer, and while this news would excite fans, we must warn that this synopsis should be placed in your ledger with a grain of salt.
Black Widow does not yet have a release date.
