DC writer Scott Snyder has weighed in on footage of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker from Todd Phillips’ upcoming Elseworlds flick.
Snyder, who has written the character for the publisher’s Batman and Justice League books, has given the look his approval, admitting he’s intrigued.

“I feel like it SHOULDN’T work and yet… I’m genuinely crazy excited for it. It seems daring, weird and dark in a way that could be visionary,” he tweeted. “In the end, the worst offense w/Joker would be playing it safe, boring, so I’m all in for something like this.”

Fans were shown images of Phoenix’s character, known as Arthur Fleck, earlier this month without make-up. Phillips later shared test footage of the character, showing him wearing the makeup that would transform him into Batman’s arch-nemesis. There’s also some indication the name Arthur Fleck may be a nod to Ben Affleck, who plays Batman in the DC Extended Universe.
