Three years since the finale of its second season and True Detective is coming back with a new star tackling another unsettling case.
Luke Cage star Mahershala Ali leads the latest season of the HBO anthology crime series with the first trailer for the upcoming third season teasing a return to form for the series after the mixed reception to its second season in 2015.

Following Ali’s new protagonist, police detective Wayne Hays, the new season revolves around the case of two missing children in 1980 Arkansas. Similar to the show’s critically acclaimed first season, Season 3 will unfold across multiple time periods with the trailer providing glimpses of Hays at different points of his life haunted by the ongoing investigation.
Premiering in 2014, the crime drama features a different cast of characters and mystery each season with the first season following a pair of Louisiana detectives hunting for a serial killer from 1995 to 2012 while the second season featured a trio of detectives taking on a criminal conspiracy in Southern California.

As the series returns to its multiyear, moody roots, Ali’s character is sure to face the darkest elements of the criminal mind when the HBO series returns next year.
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, who also serves as showrunner and writer, True Detective stars Mahershala Ali, Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Carmen Ejogo, and Ray Fisher. It is scheduled to return for its third season this January on HBO.
