James Marsters Says He Would Play Spike Again for Buffy Remake

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot probably won’t have Buffy, but, if James Marsters has any say in things, it might still have Spike.

In an interview with /Film, Marsters, who played reformed vampire Spike in the original show, said that he’s open to the possibility of joining the new Buffy in whatever capacity is required of him.

“I am open to whatever Joss has in mind,” said Marsters. “Whether that’s playing Spike or something else, I told him a long time ago. Joss’s mind is always surprising so I’m open to playing Spike if Joss is involved.”

Spike, of course, was an ageless vampire, and Marsters, currently playing villain-father Victor Stein on Marvel’s Runaways, is not — a fact of which he is well aware.

“I think we’d have to get some really good lighting together to sell Spike, but they are doing more and more and more, both with actor health and with special effects,” said Marsters. “What would be great is if he comes back and he’s like, ‘Buffy, you look terrible. I still love you of course.’ That would be fun.”

Marsters seemed equally as unfazed by the likely lack of Buffy in the new series, adding: “I’m very excited about it. I think that the world very much needs a new slayer right now.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is set to be executive produced by Joss Whedon, with Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) writing the pilot and serving as showrunner.
