Syfy today unveiled the very first trailer for the network’s upcoming television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novella Nightflyers. The trailer was screened today at the series’ panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego.

The trailer sets up a serious act of sabotage in the spacefaring series, which sees a crew of astronauts launched into the black of space in hopes of saving the Earth from certain doom. The launch doesn’t go quite as expected (several people die fairly gruesome deaths), which leads the remaining crew to come to the conclusion that the deaths weren’t an accident, but rather an act of sabotage — one that might not be wholly human in origin.
Nightflyers was first penned by Martin, author of the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series that spawned the HBO show Game of Thrones, in 1980 as a novella. The novella would later share its name with 1985 short story collection and a 1987 sci-fi horror film. The Syfy series is the latest attempt to adapt the story for the screen.
