How Ant-Man and The Wasp Filmed That Shrinking Car Chase

One of the standout set pieces seen in trailers for Ant-Man and The Wasp is a size-changing car chase through the streets of San Francisco. Now Marvel Studios has shed light on the filming of the sequence in a new behind-the-scenes look at director Peyton Reed’s sequel.

“One of the ideas of this film is that they exported shrinking beyond just suits and people,” executive producer Nick Broussard explains in the video. “Suddenly cars can shrink, entire buildings can shrink.”

Utilizing a mix of both practical effects with mounted cameras filming in the streets of San Francisco and extensive use of green screens, the crew filmed seamless transitions between the traditional car chase and the visual effects heavy sequences. The in-depth production special also teases a whole collection of size-changing cars at the heroes disposal as Luis (Michael Peña) gleefully borrows a tricked out Hyundai Veloster for his own use.

“I love you, Dr. Pym!” grins Luis as he takes to the streets.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man and The Wasp stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Randall Park, and Walton Goggins. The film arrives in theaters on July 6.
