WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Gotham’s Season 4 finale, “No Man’s Land.”
As Fox prepares to wrap up Gotham with its upcoming fifth season, the drama’s executive producer has teased that viewers may see young Bruce Wayne go full-Batman in the final episodes, courtesy of a convenient time jump.
After adapting popular comic book storylines like The Long Halloween and “Year One,” Season 4 ended with an homage to 1999’s “No Man’s Land,” which is expected to continue in the fifth season. Ra’s al Ghul’s parting words teased that David Mazouz’s Bruce will become the Dark Knight the city needs, and it appears as if Gotham is finally willing to embrace the hero everyone knows the orphan will become.

Mazouz’s portrayal of Bruce may be among the highlights of Gotham, but there is no denying the 17-year-old actor more closely resembles Jason Todd than he does the broad-shouldered Caped Crusader. One way to solve that problem would be a time jump so that at least some of Season 5 focuses on an adult Bruce Wayne. Speaking to ComicBook.com, executive producer John Stephens weighed in on using that as a plot device, and whether it would work for Gotham.
“I would say that’s possible,” he said, before chuckling, “I would say that’s not a crazy theory.”
However, a smaller time jump is more likely, picking up events as Selina Kyle has time to recover from her gunshot wound and adopt her Catwoman persona, and Gotham‘s colorful villains have carved up their own turf in the city. That said, an even larger jump to feature adult versions of the young cast could be a novel way to round off the series.

Even if Mazouz does remain the only actor to portray Bruce on Gotham, Stephens reiterated to ComicBook.com that a fully formed version of the vigilante hero will emerge before the show ends.
“We are not gonna leave anything on the table or whatever the phrase is. We’re gonna put it all on the table, take it off of the table, yeah,” Stephens clarified. “I mean there are not going to be any steps for Bruce Wayne to take to becoming Batman that don’t get taken this season. We’re gonna see him go all the way.”
Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cory Michael Smith as The Riddler, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth. The series will return next season on Fox.
