Supergirl Casting Show’s First Transgender Character for Season 4

The third season of Supergirl has yet to wrap up its run on the CW, but the show is already looking ahead to season four. It was revealed today that the series’ showrunners are looking to cast a transgender character for the upcoming season in what looks to be a major role.

According to Comicbook.com, a casting notice was recently discovered for a character called Nia Nal. The character is said to be a transgender woman in her early 20’s that is described as a “young Cat Grant type.” Not only is the network looking to cast a transgender woman, but the casting call also suggests that it is looking to cast said role with open ethnicity.

While it’ll more than likely be some time before any casting news is announced, the addition of a transgender character in a superhero series is something worth celebrating, as it comes at a time when fans have been asking for more LGBTQIA representation in popular media.

While details are still relatively sparse regarding the character of Nia, the casting call teases “a confident, wunderkind of a fashionista.” She was reportedly once a political speechwriter prior to joining the CatCo investigative reporting team, where she brings sparkling wit and biting humor to the team. However, under that “banter-y, chic facade,” there is said to be a “soulful young woman who has much to offer the world.”

With the addition of Nia, who looks to be playing a large role in CatCo, it seems safe to assume Kara will return her focus to her journalism career in the fourth season. For the most part, CatCo has become a small part of the show’s focus since the first season, when Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant ran the company.

After the shift from CBS to the CW, Flockhart opted not to continue as a series regular and has instead made a handful of recurring guest appearances. Her character has since moved on to working as the press secretary for President Olivia Marsdin. Now that Lena Luthor has purchased the company, it appears CatCo will become an important part of Supergirl‘s storylines going forward — especially with the addition of Nia.

Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, Chris Wood as Mon-El, Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor, and Odette Annable as Samantha Arias/Reign.
