Despite breaking a few records, Deadpool 2 failed to top its predecessor’s three-day opening weekend box office haul.
Estimates originally had the highly-anticipated sequel looking at a $135 million opening, which would have put it slightly above the first film’s $133.5 million opening. However, even with a massive Friday debut, Deadpool 2 only managed to pull in $125 million this weekend, giving it the second-best R-rated opening. That number, however, could drop a bit lower when numbers come in on Monday, depending on the film’s legs at the box office today, with Fox predicting an opening closer to $122-$123 million.

Working against Deadpool 2 is the fact that it didn’t open over a holiday weekend like the first film. While the film could prove to have legs over Memorial Day weekend, it will also be going up against Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is looking at a massive $140-$170 million opening over the four-day weekend. Still, $125 million is an impressive feat for an R-rated flick and, unsurprisingly, the sequel and its predecessor, do hold the first and second place for biggest R-rated opening, topping It‘s $123.4 million opening.
Internationally, the film pulled in $176 million. That would give the film a global opening of $301 million. While that number does fall shy of the $200 million opening many had expected, a $176 million international opening is made all the more impressive by the fact that those numbers don’t include China. (Like with the first film, a release for Deadpool 2 is not currently planned in China.)
