Though fans around the world would likely welcome his return to the big screen, the Russo brothers refuse to confirm or deny whether Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Phil Coulson in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
First joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008’s Iron Man, Coulson went on to have parts in Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers, the last of which saw him apparently killed off by Loki. Fortunately, it wasn’t the end, and with a leading role in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there has been plenty more to see from Gregg’s high-ranking character.

Fans already know that Gregg is set to play Agent Coulson again in the ’90s setting of Captain Marvel, but Anthony Russo won’t spoil whether he’s retiring a little earlier in Infinity War. BuzzFeed reporter Adam B. Vary tweeted that Russo dodged the question during the movie’s recent press tour with a reference to something Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt had said earlier to divert attention away from another potentially spoilerific question.
Anthony Russo, asked if Agent Coulson will return for #AvengersInfinityWar, says, “Uh, I’d like to talk more about bass fishing.” Then tap dances talking about the writing process in general: “We thought about everybody in the MCU, and how they could play a role in the story.”

Infinity War already has a supersized cast featuring the likes of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, so there’s likely not room for everyone. Joe Russo has already said adding the many characters from the MCU TV shows would be practically impossible, but while characters like Daisy and May are unlikely, Coulson would be a prime candidate for an Infinity War cameo.

As with most questions from Infinity War‘s recent press tour, the answer is never as clear-cut as a simple yes or no. Russo doesn’t say no to a Coulson cameo, and if Gregg has managed to keep a role in the film a secret, it would be one of the movies many big surprises that have been promised. However, with only days to go until Avengers: Infinity War‘s general release, audiences don’t have to wait long to see if Coulson gets to put on his gray suit and meet up with the old gang for another outing.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin, among others. The film opens April 27 worldwide.
