Little is known about Sigourney Weaver’s character on The Defenders, beyond that she’s the primary antagonist of Marvel’s street-level heroes. However, one of the showrunners of the Netflix miniseries has provided another cryptic clue about the enigmatic Alexandra and her relationship to the Hand.

“In Daredevil and Iron Fist, the two shows with the most references to the Hand, [characters] always say ‘Oh, there are players beyond [those we’ve met] that are bigger than this,’ or ‘There are people that work beyond this who are pulling the strings,’” executive producer Marco Ramirez told Entertainment Weekly. “The truth is she’s like the thing in the shadows who’s finally walking out.”
Feeling generous, Ramirez ended with one final tease regarding the choice of name for Weaver’s character. “We chose [the name] ‘Alexandra’ because it sounded regal.”

It’s clear that Weaver’s Alexandra is the person pulling the strings of the Hand, but narrowing down exactly which analog she has in the comics becomes a bit trickier. Of course, we have our own theories about just who Alexandra could be, and it isn’t the leader of The Hand, but rather the very reason for its existence.
Arriving Aug. 18 on Netflix, the eight-episode Defenders stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Finn Jones as Danny Rand, Elodie Yung as Elektra Natchios, Sigourney Weaver as Alexandra, Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Scott Glenn as Stick, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple and Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing.
