Wonder Woman 2 Will Use IMAX Cameras for Select Sequences

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 is reportedly set to film select scenes with IMAX cameras in order to create an even bigger spectacle for fans of the DC Extended Universe.

For Jenkins’ highly acclaimed Wonder Woman, no scenes were specifically shot using IMAX cameras, but with Marvel Studios shooting Avengers: Infinity War entirely in the format, it’s clear that Warner Bros. wants to keep up.

The information was revealed in a transcript of IMAX head of entertainment Greg Foster’s announcement of the company’s 2017 earnings to investors. He confirmed that “select sequences” of Wonder Woman 2 will be shot this way. While parts of Justice League were shot in the IMAX-friendly aspect ratio by Zack Snyder, that film wasn’t as well-received at the box office, but Warner Bros. knows it’s a better bet with Wonder Woman 2, which will see the studio adding some style to the substance Jenkins crafted in her original film.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was also shot partially using IMAX cameras and recently, Christopher Nolan wowed fans by doing the same with Dunkirk. Geoff Johns has already started shaping the plot with Expendables writer Dave Callaham, and they’ll certainly be looking to build on the cinematic spectacle of the first film which had bombastic action sequences as Gal Gadot’s Diana of Themyscira took on Ares and his earthly armies during World War I.

Not much is known of the plot at present except that it’s poised to start shooting in May; Kristen Wiig is lined up to play Diana’s nemesis, Cheetah, and Chris Pine is somehow being tapped to return despite his Steve Trevor dying in the preceding movie.

Wonder Woman 2 will be directed by Patty Jenkins, who is set to co-write the film alongside DC Entertainment President & Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and Expendables scribe Dave Callaham. The film is set to hit theaters on Nov. 1, 2019.
