Legends of Tomorrow Set Out to Spend As Much Money As Possible On Finale

With the Season 3 finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow coming next week, The CW is pulling out all the stops as the DC Comics-based super-team prepares for their epic showdown with this season’s central villain, Mallus (John Noble) with executive producer Phil Klemmer promising to leave nothing on the table financially.

“The goal of a finale is to spend all the money,” Klemmer explained in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “You can’t take it with you. Basically the strategy is, you try to save and save and save and then when it gets to the end, it’s a trip to Vegas where you pull out all the stops. For us, it is akin to a crossover, where you need to spend millions of dollars on visual effects and guest casts.”

After failing to stop Mallus previously with the use of totems, the team retreats to the Wild West where they team up with fan-favorite gunslinger, Jonah Hex (Johnathon Schaech), along with some other familiar faces including John Constantine (Matt Ryan) who has already been confirmed to appear on the recently renewed series’ fourth season as a regular cast member.

“We wanted to feel like the season was moving towards something,” Klemmer added, “It’s about finding the spectacle and spending all the money and having it be a giant blowout, but at the same time finding that emotional satisfaction. We had some cool, deep individual character stories this year, whether it was Sara and Ava’s romance, or Zari coming to terms with not being able to save the future that she’s from, and Nate and Amaya’s impossible romance.”

The ensemble-driven DC Comics television series has seen the team radically change the timeline of the Arrowverse where most of The CW’s DC Comics series take place, save a young Barack Obama from Gorilla Grodd, and tease a final confrontation between White Canary (Caity Lotz) and Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). April 9’s finale stands to bring these disparate threads together in a big-budget showdown with loads of familiar faces.

Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/Atom, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya Jiwe/Vixen, Nick Zano as Nate Heywood/Steel and Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West/Kid Flash.
