Batman Star Adam West Missing From 2018 Oscar In Memoriam Segment

Beloved Batman actor Adam West was among the faces notably absent Sunday from the 90th Academy Awards ceremony’s “In Memoriam” montage honoring industry figures who died in the previous year.

Best known for playing the Caped Crusader on the 1960s Batman television series and in the 1966 film, West passed away in June at age 88.

Introduced by Jennifer Garner, Sunday night’s segment showcased 51 stars, including Jerry Lewis, George A. Romero, Roger Moore, Sam Shepard, June Foray and Martin Landau.

West wasn’t the only person who didn’t make the cut, of course; Powers Boothe, Rose Marie, Miguel Ferrer, Della Reese, John Hillerman, Tobe Hooper, Robert Guillaume and David Ogden Stiers, who passed away Saturday, were also among those missing (Bill Paxton, who died the day before last year’s ceremony, wasn’t included in the 2018 segment either, but he was mentioned by Garner).

Each year the Oscars montage is invariably followed by a flurry of tweets and petitions calling out significant omissions. But as with virtually every other aspect of the Academy Awards ceremony, from nominations to voting to ticket disbursement, the “in memoriam” reel is subject to a process, with a committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences charged with whittling down 300 or so submissions to something more manageable — usually somewhere between 40 and 50 people.

Those who make the final cut are names, faces and, in the case of June Foray, voices that are familiar to viewers, which why those who work in production are seldom included. Actors, like West, who are more closely associated with television than film often don’t make the reel, either.

However, West does lead the “in memoriam” gallery on the Oscars website. He was also honored in June with a ceremony in which the iconic Bat-Signal was projected onto Los Angeles City Hall, and in tributes by DC Comics and Family Guy.
