Another key element of the Batman mythos is about to be introduced on Fox’s Gotham, although probably not in the form that fans imagined: James Gordon’s signature mustache.
New images for the March 8 episode, “A Dark Knight: A Beautiful Darkness,” reveals star Ben McKenzie sporting not the luxurious broom on his upper lip that’s become associated with Commissioner Gordon in comic books, animation and film, but … well, something more akin to Gomez Addams or John Waters.
It’s not time to panic, however, as this doesn’t appear to be a poorly conceived to established facial hair canon; judging from the episode synopsis, it’s likely part of “an unsettling dream sequence” that rattles Bruce Wayne. Unsettling, indeed.

McKenzie previously addressed his character’s lack of facial hair, going so far as to try on a selection of fake mustaches during a 2016 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Strangely enough, the mustache Gordon sports in the new Gotham images bears an uncanny resemblance to one of those he took for a spin on the talk show.
Here’s the synopsis for “A Dark Knight: A Beautiful Darkness”:
Ivy tracks a secret project on which Wayne Enterprises is working and begins to target anyone that can give her information. Meanwhile, Jerome becomes obsessed with Penguin in Arkham. Also, Gordon begins to second guess his deal with Sofia and an unsettling dream sequence shakes up Bruce.
Returning from its midseason hiatus Thursday on Fox, Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cameron Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
